Meet Sarah
Sarah and her husband Jeff have two sons, ages 10 and 7. Their older son has chronic allergies; their younger son recently broke his wrist and may need corrective surgery next year.
What Sarah Considers
Because Jeff is eligible for medical coverage through his employer, Sarah cannot cover him under the Timken medical plan. After reviewing the available options, they decide that Sarah should enroll herself and their sons under the Timken medical plan. Sarah doesn’t expect to need many medical services, but their sons will need care throughout the year. She also expects the boys will need at least four mail-order prescriptions and several retail prescriptions. She asks her doctor to prescribe generic medications whenever possible, but her older son needs one or two brand-name medications.
What Sarah Decides and Why
Sarah reviews her enrollment communications and decides the features of the Healthy Savings Choice+ plan are a great match. She uses the Compare Plans feature to confirm her decision.
Sarah likes the idea that she will have an HSA with a $1,400 Timken contribution to help offset her out-of-pocket expenses this year. She also likes the fact that she can roll over unused dollars from year to year. She probably won’t have much to roll over at the end of this year, but she sees the potential rollover as a great benefit in future years when her family’s health care needs will be lower.
Under the Healthy Savings Choice+ plan, some prescription drug costs are subject to the overall medical plan deductible, which would require her to pay 100 percent of their prescription costs until the deductible is met. Once Sarah researches her family’s actual prescription drug costs, she decides that this plan will work for them because the medical and prescription drug costs both apply to the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. While the Legacy PPO Plan has the separate prescription drug deductible, Sarah decides the Healthy Savings Choice+ Plan is a better value when she considers the money she will save in access fees as well as the HSA contribution from Timken. She also notes that some medications are included on the Preventive Drug List and are not subject to the deductible, which will help.
