Meet Ava
Ava is active and tries to take good care of her health. She aggressively manages her type 1 diabetes with help from her medical plan, who provides the company’s health management program. Last year, she needed 12 different prescriptions and visited her primary care doctor every four months. She also schedules recommended preventive care. Although her three children (ages 20, 17, and 14) are healthy, they are active in sports, and Ava worries about what would happen if they become injured.
What Ava Considers
Ava expects she’ll continue to need a high level of medical care and support this year. She likes knowing exactly what she’ll need to pay for a covered service or medication. She prefers copays much better than coinsurance.
Ava doesn’t have a lot of money saved for emergencies, so she’s looking for the lowest possible annual deductible—even if that means she’ll pay higher monthly access fees.
She was hospitalized for an issue related to her diabetes two years ago. While she hopes that won’t happen again, Ava wants to be prepared just in case. That’s also true when planning for possible health care needs for her children. All three are healthy and active, but with a college football player and two high school basketball players, she never knows when one of them will need to have urgent care!
What Ava Decides and Why
Ava reviews all of the plan comparison information on the MyTotalRewards website. She elects the Legacy PPO Plan because it features predictable copays for most services and offers a lower out-of-pocket maximum in the event of a serious illness or injury. Ava feels this is important when it comes to planning for the possible needs for her three kids.
In addition, she’s planning to continue to work with the health professionals associated with her medical plan administrator to slow the progression of her diabetes and avoid future medical emergencies.
