Meet Mark

Mark and his wife Karen enjoy exercising and being active. They stay in shape by going to the gym a few times a week. They rarely get sick, seldom need prescription medications, and see their doctors for annual checkups.

What Mark Considers

Mark and Karen don’t expect to need a lot of medical services or prescriptions this year, although they are thinking about starting a family soon. Karen is not eligible for medical coverage through her employer, so Mark needs to select the Timken medical coverage that fits both their needs. He doesn’t want to pay higher access fees for the lowest deductible but wants to make sure they are protected in the event of a serious illness. He also wants to make sure their preventive care is covered.

What Mark Decides and Why

Mark decides the Healthy Savings Choice+ plan is the right option for their needs.

Under all medical plan options, the couple’s in-network preventive care will be covered at 100 percent. In addition, they’ll receive a $1,400 Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution from Timken. This amount can be applied to their deductible each year, should he or Karen need any other services. Any balance in their HSA at the end of the year rolls over to the next year.

The rollover feature allows their HSA to grow and be used for possible future medical expenses. Because Mark and Karen expect to have higher expenses in another year or two when they start their family, he sees this feature as a big plus. Mark also notices that the Healthy Savings Choice+ Plan option has lower payroll deductions than the Legacy PPO Plan. After the annual deductible is met, the plan provides 80/20 coinsurance for eligible in-network care (60/40 for out-of-network care) and an annual out-of-pocket maximum.

Mark knows he could lower his monthly access fees if he elects the Healthy Savings Choice plan, but he wants the lower deductible and higher HSA contribution should he and Karen start their family sooner rather than later. Mark feels this plan will help them better manage any out-of-pocket expenses they may face.
